Is there an effective remedy to the danger of Islamic fundamentalism?

As the recent murder of Drummer Lee Rigby shows, Islamic fundamentalism and Islamist radicalisation is a threat to our lives and to Law and Order in our country, but we must not lose the perspective that it is not as a big a threat as was posed throughout the Cold War by the murderous, leftist regimes of the Soviet Union and Communist China, who together were responsible for the mass murder of perhaps as many of 150 million people.  They also threatened nuclear holocaust against the West and sought, at every turn, to infiltrate and undermine our society and often murder people who opposed them.   Nor as I implied in one of my recent postings have Islamists yet proved even as big a threat as the IRA was.

However Islamists are undoubtedly a problem of our age and as the numbers of Muslims in our country have been rapidly increasing we need urgently to consider as a society whether anything can be done to remedy Islamist radicalisation.

In the article below Melanie Phillips makes some eminently sensible points which it would be very encouraging, but totally naïve, to imagine that our current crop of political leaders would even dare to think, let alone utter!

What do you think?

Here is the article:-

Until our leaders admit the true nature of Islamic extremism, we will never defeat it

By MELANIE PHILLIPS
PUBLISHED: 23:04, 26 May 2013 | UPDATED: 23:04, 26 May 2013

Ever since the spectre of Islamic terrorism in the West first manifested itself, Britain has had its head stuck firmly in the sand.

After both 9/11 and the 7/7 London transport bombings, the Labour government promised to take measures to defend the country against further such attacks.

It defined the problem, however, merely as terrorism, failing to understand that the real issue was the extremist ideas which led to such violence.

Accordingly, it poured money into Muslim community groups, many of which turned out to be dangerously extreme.

When David Cameron came to power, his Government raised hopes of a more realistic approach when it pledged to counter extremist ideas rather than just violence.
This approach, too, has failed. The Government still has no coherent strategy for countering Islamist radicalisation.

Following last week’s barbaric slaughter of Drummer Rigby on the streets of Woolwich by two Islamic fanatics, the Prime Minister has announced that he will head a new Tackling Extremism and Radicalisation Task Force.

And the Home Secretary has said she will look at widening the banning of radical groups preaching hate.

But at the heart of these promises remains a crucial gap. That is the need to define just what kind of extremism we are up against.

The Government has been extraordinarily reluctant to do this — because it refuses to face the blindingly obvious fact that this extremism is religious in nature.

It arises from an interpretation of Islam which takes the words of the Koran literally as a command to kill unbelievers in a jihad, or holy war, in order to impose strict Islamic tenets on the rest of the world.

Of course, millions of Muslims in Britain and elsewhere totally reject this interpretation of their religion.

Most British Muslims want to live peacefully and enjoy the benefits of Western culture. They undoubtedly utterly deplore the notion that the kind of carnage that occurred in Woolwich should take place in Britain.

Betrayal
And let’s not forget that, worldwide, most victims of the jihad are themselves Muslims whom the extremists judge to be polluted by Western ideas.

Nevertheless, this fundamentalist interpretation of the Koran is what is being spouted by hate preachers in Britain and on the internet, and is steadily radicalising thousands of young British Muslims.

Now the Prime Minister says he will crack down on such extremism. Yet after the Woolwich atrocity, he claimed it was ‘a betrayal of Islam’ and that ‘there is nothing in Islam that justifies this truly dreadful act’.

The London Mayor Boris Johnson went even further, claiming: ‘It is completely wrong to blame this killing on the religion of Islam’ and that the cause was simply the killers’ ‘warped and deluded mindset’.

Yet the video footage of the killers — who had shouted ‘Allahu Akhbar’ when butchering Drummer Rigby — records one of them citing verses in the Koran exhorting the faithful to fight and kill unbelievers, and declaring: ‘We swear by Almighty Allah we will never stop fighting you.’

Frankly, these comments by the Prime Minister and London Mayor were as absurd as saying the medieval Inquisition, for example, had nothing to do with the Catholic Church, but was just the product of a few warped and deluded individuals.

Power
Their comments were also deeply troubling. For if politicians refuse to acknowledge the true nature of this extremism, they will never counter it effectively.

But then, government officials have always refused to admit that this is a religious war. They simply don’t understand the power of religious fanaticism.

Of course, there are fanatics in all religions. Within both Judaism and Christianity,  there are deep divisions between ultras, liberals and those in between.

In medieval times, moreover, Christianity used its interpretation of the Bible also to kill ‘unbelievers’, because early Christians believed they had a divine duty to make the world conform to their religion at all costs. That stopped when the Reformation ushered the Church into modernity, and today no Christian wants to use violence to convert others to their faith.

The problem with the extremist teachings of Islam is that the religion has never had a similar ‘reformation’.
Certainly, there are enlightened Muslims in Britain who would dearly love their religion to be reformed.

But they have the rug pulled from under their feet by the Government’s flat denial of the religious nature of this terrible problem.

Some people instead ascribe the actions of the Woolwich killers to factors such as thuggish gang membership, drug abuse or family breakdown. But it is precisely such lost souls who are vulnerable to Islamist fanatics and who provide them with father figures, a sense of belonging and a cause which gives apparent meaning to their lives.

Many people find it incomprehensible that such fanatics remain free to peddle their poison. Partly, this is because the Security Service likes to gather intelligence through their actions. But it is also because of a failure to understand what amounts to a continuum  of extremism.

There are too many British Muslims who, while abhorring violence at home, nevertheless support the killing abroad of British or American forces or Israelis, regard unbelievers as less than fully human, and homosexuals or apostates as deserving the death penalty.

Such bigotry creates the poisonous sea in which dehumanisation and religious violence swim.

To the failure to understand all this must be added the widespread terror of being thought ‘Islamophobic’ or ‘racist’.

It is quite astonishing that universities mostly refuse to crack down on extremist speakers and radicalisation on campus — despite at least four former presidents of Islamic student societies having faced terrorist charges.

In a devastating account published at the weekend, Professor Michael Burleigh, who advised the Government on revising its counter-radicalisation strategy, described how this process descended into a ‘sad shambles’. He related how the Federation of Islamic Student Societies (FOSIS) had created a sexually segregated environment in which young people were being systematically indoctrinated in anti-Jew, anti-homosexual and anti-Western hatred by Islamist speakers on campus.

But although the Government condemned FOSIS for its failure to ‘fully challenge terrorist and extremist ideology’, with the Home Secretary even ordering that civil servants withdraw from its graduate recruitment fair, the Faith and Communities Minister, Baroness Warsi, actually endorsed it by attending one of its events at the House of Lords.

Lethal
Nor has the Government done anything to stop extremist preachers targeting and converting criminals in British jails at a deeply alarming rate.

On top of all this official incoherence is the paralysis caused by the excesses of the ‘human rights’ culture.
Thus the Home Secretary is facing a monumental battle to get through Parliament a Communications Bill that would give police and security services access to records of individuals’ internet use.

It is said that some of these extremist preachers exploit loopholes in the law. If so, then the law should be changed.

But we all know what would befall any such attempt. It would be all but drowned out by shrieks that we were ‘doing the terrorists’ job for them’ by ‘undermining our own hard-won liberties’.

Well, it’s time to face down such claims as vacuous and lethal nonsense.

The people threatening our liberties are Islamic radicals determined to destroy our way of life.

It is those who refuse to acknowledge the true nature of this threat who are doing the terrorists’ job for them.
And unless Britain finally wakes up from its self-destructive torpor, all who love civilised values — Muslim and non-Muslim alike — will be the losers.

  1. Islam is 700 years younger than Christianity. If we look back at Christianity even as recently as the 16th century we see the brutality of Christianity, e.g., the putting to the sword of the citizens of protestant Magdeburg (Europe's biggest city) during the counter-reformation and the crimes of the Inquisition, the burnings at the stake of protestants and of native red Indians, the murders of Huguenots in France, and so on. Even in the last century, Hitler built on the blame put on the Jews for the death of Christ by the Church of Rome. The protestant reformation which Melanie Phillips writes about is still in the process of working itself out in the Church of Rome. Much of the catholic (universal) church now subscribes to the protestant interpretation of Christianity, but most Christians still belong to the unreformed Roman "Catholic" Church.
If the majority of the catholic church is still in the process of modernizing after 2,000 years, the Muslims can hardly be expected to have gotten so far after 1,300 years. Christianity has a 700 year lead on Islam. If Muslims are back in the Middle Ages in their ideology, it is scarcely surprising. The trouble is that where the crusaders were armed with swords, the Jihadists, with their literal interpretation of the Qur!an, have high explosives. Some Muslims, i.e., the Sufis, have very advanced interpretations of the Qur!an, which make them targets for Jihadists

    1. Forget the history we need to see what is happening NOW.

Anyone who talks about the Iraq War or other interventions in the middle east has simply fallen for Islamic propaganda. The entire Left have.

The REAL cause of militant Islam is actually the West because since the 1930s we in the West have been doing some very dirty deals with Islamic extremists, the MSM have been told to cover this up along with hiding details about the Eurabia Project.

Mark Curtis in his book explains what has been going on for decades and it is not just the UK behind it.

  2. I have recently heard confirmation of what I have long suspected and was told about 30 years ago. Peter Sutherland, the United Nationas commissioner for migration has said that Europe must accept millions more third world migrants in order to ensure the dismantling of the old homogeneous ethnocentric nations of Europe to produce a borderless hotch-potch of 500 million people. What he did not add was that this will needs must be a totalitarian state as you cannot stop different racial and cultural groups from living in a permanent state of emnity and friction without the total removal of fundamental freedoms. This is what is happening in the United States as the demographics change and the Europeans who founded the country approach minority status.
What he also did not say is that the EU once successful would be joined up with the United States, India and beyond in the bid to achieve United Nations one world totalitarian government from which there will be no escape.

I have just read a suggestion that Britain and possibly France and Holland and Belgium are being used as testbeds for this multicultural one world government but that the problem is Islam at the moment. Their governments are determined to crack the Islam problem and to keep their indigenous peoples under until they have made muslims just another docile part of the mosaic. Hence, the determination to take their side and not ours. It will of course unravel eventually and we are now reaching that point not only here but also in Sweden. As somebody has pointed out, when the indigenous population realise that they have been impoverished - and this is happening to both working classes and middle classes here - to make it all work whilst they are being told to put up with it by a controlling plutocracy then the balloon will go up. Economically, we know that mass immigration has cost us more than it has given us and we now have millions of social housing homes to build and schools costing hundreds of billions of pounds.

  4. What the globalists (capitalists and Marxists) are doing is wicked. They rob young men like those accused of the murder of Drummer Lee Rigby of their identities. As when the British state turns Nigerian Christian boys into crazed extremists with no other identity than as Muslim fighters for Islam and no nationality except Islam.
And, by the same token, they are robbing English boys of their nationality making them into mere ciphers in the squalid global scrabble represented by 'reality television', when all too many of them will never rise out of the underclass to which Cameron and his pals are assigning them.

  5. Our beloved leaders will not confront this problem because of "Political Correctness". They dare not do, or say, anything that may "offend" Muslims. They were quick to say that the Muslim gangs who preyed upon English girls were not alone; that that sort of thing happens "in all communities". It is strange that no prosecutions have been reported "in all communities".
The writer of this article is spot on. There is something unpleasant in the Koran that most Muslims opt out of. It is that unpleasant bit that licences the violence we see almost daily.
There is similar violence documented in the Old Testament. That documentation is not used as a pretext for murder, today.
One has only to look, however, at the over-the-top reactions of normally rational Muslims to, say, cartoons in Danish periodicals to see that the sinister element of Islam reaches even the "nice" Muslims.
There is an urgent need to put an end to the notion of "Politically Correct". It stifles debate and hamstrings politicans who seek to advance the common good.

Further, the Irish were a vital element in the expansion of the British Empire, providing very effective regiments in all theatres of war - for example, in the Peninsular, or, indeed, during the American Revolution (some of the best Loyalists were Irish), or the 60,000 (southern) Irish volunteers (no conscripts) who were fighting with the British Army in 1916. 8. Robin,

I'm pleased you talked about this problem because it is the SINGLE most dangerous issue facing us at the moment.

Wherever Islam goes, there's always violence and upheaval. No country has survived the advance of Islam not just because of it's violence but because of the deception (known as 'Taqiyya') by the moderates to gain acceptance. Once muslims hit about 35% of the population, the Taqiyya ends and all muslims become radical.

The only solution now is full scale deportation of the extremists and an acceptance by the moderates that we indigenous English people have the right to remain the dominant race in England, the ball is now in their court if they want to leave with us in peace.

We have very little time left, and the prevarications on the part of government and EU are only making matters worse. If there's no change within 5 years, it will be a full scale civil war and hundreds of thousands of people will be killed. This is of course what the left WANTS.

This is a very interesting article. We must all campaign against the view that Muslims and Islam must not be criticised, it must be understood that they are determined to prevail over us, and they are not just a small number of misguided people. They are in large numbers, determined and ruthless especially among their own. Dissent is not tolerated.

The people of England have suffered long enough at the hands of the cowardly and politically correct amongst us who have taken the soft option and made us feel guilty when we stand up for our own culture, history and beliefs. Many of us are still reluctant to speak out even in private, they know we are in the right but have been cowed by 'authority'. All this must end, we must fight against the evil in our society, be it the killers, the preachers of hate, or their apologists. As for the timid, they must be encouraged to believe that we will win but only by being active.

  12. Watching the footage of the coronation on television today, it is difficult to believe that that country ever existed. It seems like another planet and yet that was England's last gasp as we are, to quote Paul Weston, driven out of our cities and ultimately out of our country. And I have lived through it all and done nothing like so many others. Honour, decency, self-respect and respect for others all have been rubbished by those who worship money and have spread their evil doctrine to the rest of us.

So it looks as if they have now found the means to silence Marine Le Pen but she will not go down without a fight. She is a tough old bird and probably tougher than a lot of men and being a solicitor will know how to defend herself against accusations of incitement to racial hatred. If she is imprisoned and if things go underground in France then they will have real trouble. I have a feeling that most countries in Western Europe are gearing up for ethnic against immigrant civil war. Soon the chaos of North Africa and the Middle East will be echoed in Europe. But then I did read that there is a theory that the shadowy elites are aiming to rule a world that is in permanent chaos.

There is no limit to the vindictiveness of Marxists. In their aim to sideline Christianity and empty the churches as set out in their ten point Frankfut plan of 1928, they have now put Songs of Praise on a 6.30 in the morning. This is the only contact that many pensioners have with the churches they are no longer able to attend. They will not have the wit to record the programme for viewing later. How these people hate the indigenous Christian population of this country. Also, note that not one culturally Marxist European government has spoken out in defence of Christians being murdered by muslims in North Africa and the Middle East. These same governments were behind the removal of their leaders who defended Christians in their midst, as with Assad in Syria.

When you're picking a spot to hold the world's most powerful policy summit, there's really only one place that will do: Watford.
On Thursday afternoon, June the 7th 2013, a heady mix of the world's politicians, bank bosses, billionaires, chief executives and European royalty will swoop up the elegant drive of the Grove hotel, north of Watford, where they will be welcomed by committee member Ken Clarke MP and the Chancellor George Osborne MP, to begin the annual Bilderberg conference.
It's a remarkable spectacle – one of nature's wonders – and the most exciting thing to happen to Watford since that roundabout on the A412 got traffic lights. The area round the hotel is in lockdown: locals are having to show their passports to get to their homes. It's exciting too for the delegates. The CEO of Royal Dutch Shell will hop from his limo, delighted to be spending three solid days in policy talks with the head of HSBC, the president of Dow Chemical, his favourite European finance ministers and US intelligence chiefs. The conference is the highlight of every plutocrat's year and has been since 1954. The only time Bilderberg skipped a year was 1976, after the group's founding chairman, Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands, was caught taking bribes from Lockheed Martin.

The room was bugged and transcripts were taken of the conversations which Churchill wanted to use to ensure that those Nazis never returned to power in post-War Germany.

Then Labour won the 1945 election and those transcripts were buried and those Nazis took up positions in post-War Germany. Why should Labour do this? The first meeting of the Biderbergers had ex-communists and ex-Nazis present. Strange unless you realise that if you want to create a world that is a one world totalitarian prison then you need people who were keen on totalitarian socialism ( for that is what Nazism was as well as communism ).

Ever since the end of the War we have been conned and lured into a one world totalitarian state by both Labour and Connservatives. Heath hoodwinked us into becoming members of what is today a Europe-wide Marxist totalitarian state, to be followed by a link up by a North America which is a nascent police-state also. Doubtless this link-up is on the agenda in Watford and slippery Dave one of the New World Order's chief architects will be there also. Sickening to hear him read a lesson at the coronation anniversary service today. He and his predecessors have ensured that the England and the Europe of 1953 and the Old Commonwealth of that day would be smashed to pieces. The only chance for the English now is to ditch the three parties come the next election. Gradually I believe they are beginning to get the message but the chances of that happening are pretty remote. Most don't have a clue as to what is behind it all but they realise that something just doesn't quite add up.

The following is from Kenneth Clark's book 'Civilisation', the first Chapter.

Civilisation might have drifted downstream for a long time, but in the middle of the seventh century there appeared a new force, with faith, energy, a will to conquer and an alternative culture: Islam. The strength of Islam was its simplicity. The early Christian Church had dissipated its strength by theological controversies, carried on for three centuries with incredible violence and ingenuity. But Mahomet, the prophet of Islam, preached the simplest doctrine that has ever gained acceptance; and it gave to his followers the invincible solidary that had once directed the Roman legions. In a miraculously short time - about fifty years - the classical world was overrun. Only its bleached bones stood out against the Mediterranean sky.

Clark calls that first chapter, By the skin of our teeth i.e. that civilisation managed to survive and be reborn. We are at the same point now and I hope and pray that we will once more escape the fanatics by the skin of our teeth. I think the tide is turning all over Europe and North America so just keep working at it.

Clark ends his series by saying civilisation will only go down if we lose confidence in ourselves. I never lost confidence in European Christian Civilisation but the onslaught by the Left with their islamic allies and backed by the shadowy elites behind it all has been so unrelenting that so many have. Don't lose confidence; without European civilisation the rest of the world would be in the middle ages or a millennium or two before that. We must be proud of what we achieved and never be made to feel ashamed or guilty.
