Honesty about analysing Islam's trajectory?

Below is an article that should be read by everyone concerned about politics and about the future of our country, and of the world, wriitten by the intrepid Douglas Murray.

Will politicians finally admit that the Paris attacks had something to do with Islam?

by Douglas Murray

Written after the Charlie Hebdo shooting in January and revised after the Paris attacks in November, Douglas Murray’s piece on politicians’ responses to Islamic terror attacks was The Spectator‘s third most read article of 2015:

The West’s movement towards the truth is remarkably slow. We drag ourselves towards it painfully, inch by inch, after each bloody Islamist assault.

In France, Britain, Germany, America and nearly every other country in the world it remains government policy to say that any and all attacks carried out in the name of Mohammed have ‘nothing to do with Islam’. It was said by George W. Bush after 9/11, Tony Blair after 7/7 and Tony Abbott after the Sydney attack last month. It is what David Cameron said after two British extremists cut off the head of Drummer Lee Rigby in London, when ‘Jihadi John’ cut off the head of aid worker Alan Henning in the ‘Islamic State’ and when Islamic extremists attacked a Kenyan mall, separated the Muslims from the Christians and shot the latter in the head. It was what President François Hollande said after the massacre of journalists and Jews in Paris in January. And it is all that most politicians will be able to come out with again after the latest atrocities in Paris.

All these leaders are wrong. In private, they and their senior advisers often concede that they are telling a lie. The most sympathetic explanation is that they are telling a ‘noble lie’, provoked by a fear that we — the general public — are a lynch mob in waiting. ‘Noble’ or not, this lie is a mistake. First, because the general public do not rely on politicians for their information and can perfectly well read articles and books about Islam for themselves. Secondly, because the lie helps no one understand the threat we face. Thirdly, because it takes any heat off Muslims to deal with the bad traditions in their own religion. And fourthly, because unless mainstream politicians address these matters then one day perhaps the public will overtake their politicians to a truly alarming extent.

If politicians are so worried about this secondary ‘backlash’ problem then they would do well to remind us not to blame the jihadists’ actions on our peaceful compatriots and then deal with the primary problem — radical Islam — in order that no secondary, reactionary problem will ever grow.

Yet today our political class fuels both cause and nascent effect. Because the truth is there for all to see. To claim that people who punish people by killing them for blaspheming Islam while shouting ‘Allah is greatest’ has ‘nothing to do with Islam’ is madness. Because the violence of the Islamists is, truthfully, only to do with Islam: the worst version of Islam, certainly, but Islam nonetheless.

In January a chink was broken in this wall of disinformation when Sajid Javid, the only Muslim-born member of the British cabinet, and one of its brightest hopes, dipped a toe into this water. After the Charlie Hebdo attacks, he told the BBC: ‘The lazy answer would be to say that this has got nothing whatsoever to do with Islam or Muslims and that should be the end of that. That would be lazy and wrong.’ Sadly, he proceeded to utter the second most lazy thing one can say: ‘These people are using Islam, taking a peaceful religion and using it as a tool to carry out their activities.’

Here we land at the centre of the problem — a centre we have spent the last decade and a half trying to avoid: Islam is not a peaceful religion. No religion is, but Islam is especially not. Nor is it, as some ill-informed people say, solely a religion of war. There are many peaceful verses in the Quran which — luckily for us — the majority of Muslims live by. But it is, by no means, only a religion of peace.

I say this not because I hate Islam, nor do I have any special animus against Muslims, but simply because this is the verifiable truth based on the texts. Until we accept that we will never defeat the violence, we risk encouraging whole populations to take against all of Islam and abandon all those Muslims who are trying desperately to modernise, reform and de-literalise their faith. And — most importantly — we will give up our own traditions of free speech and historical inquiry and allow one religion to have an unbelievable advantage in the free marketplace of ideas.

It is not surprising that politicians have tried to avoid this debate by spinning a lie. The world would be an infinitely safer place if the historical Mohammed had behaved more like Buddha or Jesus. But he did not and an increasing number of people — Muslim and non-Muslim — have been able to learn this for themselves in recent years. But the light of modern critical inquiry which has begun to fall on Islam is a process which is already proving incredibly painful.

The ‘cartoon wars’ — which began when the Danish paper Jyllands-Posten published a set of cartoons in 2005 — are part of that. But as Flemming Rose, the man who commissioned those cartoons, said when I sat down with him earlier this year, there remains a deep ignorance in the West about what people like the Charlie Hebdo murderers wish to achieve. And we keep ducking it. As Rose said, ‘I wish we had addressed all this nine years ago.’

Contra the political leaders, the Charlie Hebdo murderers and the latest Paris attackers were not lunatics without motive, but highly motivated extremists intent on enforcing their Islamic ideas on 21st-century Europe. If you do not know the ideology — perverted or plausible though it may be — you can neither understand nor prevent such attacks. Nor, without knowing some Islamic history, could you understand why — whether in Mumbai or Paris — the Islamists always target the Jews.

Of course, some people are willing to give up a few of our rights. There seems, as Rose says in his book on the Danish cartoons affair,The Tyranny of Silence, some presumption that a diverse society requires greater limitations on speech, whereas of course the more diverse the society, the more diverse you are going to have to see your speech be. It is not just cartoons, but a whole system of inquiry which is being shut down in the West by way of hard intimidation and soft claims of offence-taking. The result is that, in contemporary Europe, Islam receives not an undue amount of criticism but a free ride which is unfair to all other religions. The night after the Charlie Hebdo atrocities I was pre-recording a Radio 4 programme. My fellow discussant was a very nice Muslim man who works to ‘de-radicalise’ extremists. We agreed on nearly everything. But at some point he said that one reason Muslims shouldn’t react to such cartoons is that Mohammed never objected to critics.

There may be some positive things to be said about Mohammed, but I thought this was pushing things too far and mentioned just one occasion when Mohammed didn’t welcome a critic. Asma bint Marwan was a female poetess who mocked the ‘Prophet’ and who, as a result, Mohammed had killed. It is in the texts. It is not a problem for me. But I can understand why it is a problem for decent Muslims. The moment I said this, my Muslim colleague went berserk. How dare I say this? I replied that it was in the Hadith and had a respectable chain of transmission (an important debate). He said it was a fabrication which he would not allow to stand. The upshot was that he refused to continue unless all mention of this was wiped from the recording. The BBC team agreed and I was left trying to find another way to express the same point. The broadcast had this ‘offensive’ fact left out.

I cannot imagine another religious discussion where this would happen, but it is perfectly normal when discussing Islam. On that occasion I chose one case, but I could have chosen many others, such as the hundreds of Jews Mohammed beheaded with his own hand. Again, that’s in the mainstream Islamic sources. I haven’t made it up. It used to be a problem for Muslims to rationalise, but now there are people trying to imitate such behaviour in our societies it has become a problem for all of us, and I don’t see why people in the free world should have to lie about what we read in historical texts.

We may all share a wish that these traditions were not there but they are and they look set to have serious consequences for us all. We might all agree that the history of Christianity has hardly been un-bloody. But is it not worth asking whether the history of Christianity would have been more bloody or less bloody if, instead of telling his followers to ‘turn the other cheek’, Jesus had called (even once) for his disciples to ‘slay’ non–believers and chop off their heads?

This is a problem with Islam — one that Muslims are going to have to work through. They could do so by a process which forces them to take their foundational texts less literally, or by an intellectually acceptable process of cherry-picking verses. Or prominent clerics could unite to declare the extremists non-Muslim. But there isn’t much hope of this happening. Last month, al-Azhar University in Cairo declared that although Isis members are terrorists they cannot be described as heretics.

We have spent 15 years pretending things about Islam, a complex religion with competing interpretations. It is true that most Muslims live their lives peacefully. But a sizeable portion (around 15 per cent and more in most surveys) follow a far more radical version. The remainder are sitting on a religion which is, in many of its current forms, a deeply unstable component. That has always been a problem for reformist Muslims. But the results of ongoing mass immigration to the West at the same time as a worldwide return to Islamic literalism means that this is now a problem for all of us. To stand even a chance of dealing with it, we are going to have to wake up to it and acknowledge it for what it is.

  1. An excellent, well reasoned article. The reason the political ostriches continually duck the issues raised here, (by asserting that outrages "have nothing to do with Islam," is "Political Correctness". Under this tyranny, people who dare to say otherwise are dismissed as "Islamophobes". (No need to come up with counter-arguments.)
Mr Murray has eloquently summarised thoughts that I have had for years. We cannot confront this threat, however, without confronting Political Correctness wherever it rears its very ugly head.
Political Correctness stifles debate. It also stifles the efforts of reformist Muslims.
The whole issue demonstrates just how weak our "leaders" are.

    1. Clive,
Do you think that "our" leaders might be complicit? The attack on Libya, against a country which posed us no threat, needs to be explained.
Saddam was developing nuclear weapons, Gaddafi had renounced them. The so-called Arab spring looks like a Neo-con plan to flood Europe with refugees and destabilise the nation states using Islamic terrism as the cover to bring in oppressive anti-nation measures.

  2. A recently distributed article contained the following, "Many communities around the country have become enriched during the last half century by the increase of people of different faiths This is particularly the case in such cities as London, Birmingham, Leicester and Bradford.
In Birmingham we are blessed with more than 45 per cent of the population belonging to BAME (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic) communities resulting in a rich variety of religious faiths. Our skyline has an array of church spires, gudwara domes, minarets, pagodas and other faith beautiful buildings, reflecting the breadth of worldwide religions existing in our super-diverse city."
Could there be a Caliphate in England and can it be halted, if so, how?
The English Democrats need to come up with some answers. Come on Robin, what is to be done to nip it in the bud?

    1. I have been absent from blogging again as our local library has only just re-opened after the floods. However, I think that not only the Marxist EU is about to collapse before they can achieve political and monetary union with the US on their way to one world government but it is crunch time for the whole absurd multicultural experiment and the Tower of Babel. Russia and China will have none of it and that is why they are targets for regime change. But Russians will not let the West attack them again. God did not approve of the last Tower of Babel and probably does not this time. This is not how he constructed the world but did so with people living with their own on their own piece of land. A recent spoof interview on RT was interesting. It was about making Britain less Christian to make the "refugees" feel at home. Two native Englishmen voiced their objection and one said that even though they do not go to Church on a regular basis, most English people feel themselves and their country as Christian and would not be happy not only with this but with Muslim national holidays. Most interesting too was an interview with some muslim girls who said it is their country - i.e. ours - and is Christian so why should they be made to change it. They did not feel that a royal should marry a muslim as no Muslim royal would marry a Christian.

On another occasion RT was discussing the EU and we were shown a councillor from Southwark called David Noakes. I am not sure if he is still UKIP but he said that Cameron is a Bilderberger so pledged to keep us in the EU.
He then said that the native English will be a minority in nine years. This was a shock even to me who had thought we had about 30 years to go. Make sure that everybody knows this. He said we will soon be dominated by immigrants (like the Native Americans). He was never shown again but replaced by an Adam Smith man who however said that Cameron would swing the referendum as he had all the money. Why was Noakes pulled? Did somebody put pressure on Russia Today?

This is genocide and the English people need to know it. As for Birmingham I know people who now avoid the place like the plague. Here in still sickeningly white Cumbria groups of young muslims have been turning up to help with the floods. But at the same time we are noticing groups of men going round from what seem to be Muslim countries. They are probably "refugees" so don't believe the government. So the helpful young men are probably part of the softening up exercise to make us accept this mass muslim infiltration that is planned.

Turkey is one of the chief offenders and nice to see that Merkel's new year address was subtitled in Arabic for the newcomers!!?? Turkey and Germany are working hand in glove.
And now Turkey is going to force out their 200,000 Kurds into Europe as well. A recent hit by Pegida is now available from Amazon in Germany but Amazon are going to give the money to the "refugees". I wonder who owns Amazon?
30 years ago I said that we English are going to be wiped out and was told I was paranoid. Seems I was right after all.

  3. One of the intended consequences of fracking in the USA is to undercut the economy of the oil producing country, Nigeria. That will lead to a flood of Nigerians, a largely Muslim country, desperate to get into Europe.

    1. The country that has forced down oil prices even though it is harming them themselves is Saudi Arabia. Fracking is to compete with Saudi oil. And we all know that salafist Saudi's aim is to create an Islamic world through. And we are selling them the arms to do it. Saudi Arabia is blackmailing Europe and the US. Saudi Arabia is the real enemy and was with Israel and the CIA behind September 11th. So we attacked mineral rich Afghanistan.

  4. Have just been sent something from somebody in UKIP where people same to be waking up. This is making the connection between the Pope's recent speech on a union between Christianity and Islam and the mass Islamic invasion of Europe. Merkel is obviously working for the one world agenda. I caught a bit of the programme last night about Westminster Abbey where some sort of union with Islam agenda was also being floated. Of course all this is the work of the evil Tony Blair's interfaith foundation. The piece about the Pope was from somebody living in Germany who was telling us about the chaos reigning there. And now Sweden has closed its borders. And I don't know if bloggers know about Poland's shift to the right and their Eurosceptic complexion. This is fine but it does not stop Poland objecting to Britain's trying to reduce benefits for their countrymen coming here for better wages in their tens of thousands. Poland only seems to want free movement of labour one way.

Meanwhile, very interesting things are happening in the still mostly white US state of Oregan where the militia have seized the federal building. There is rising opposition amongst white Americans to federal government and to gun control. The situation is much the same as it is here with regard to the EU. Both North America and Europe now have become centralised, totalitarian police states crushing local democracy for the sake of the financial and corporate interests that now control both prior to monetary and political union. But Russia is fighting them both on behalf of us and Christendom. I will be interested to see what Putin says in 2017 about the revolution which according to Solzhenytsin was orchestrated from outside Russia by international finance. The West is now in a different sort of Marxist state ruled by the same people after their first attempt, communism, failed.

Somebody remarked that if blacks, Hispanics or Muslims had occupied the building in Oregan then the police would not have stood back. This is because whites trust whites more than others, just as blacks trust blacks etc. This is human nature and just underlines what Enoch Powell said and that Marxist ethnic pluralism for the purposes of white genocide and world domination by a plutocratic elite does not work, any more than communism did. As Roger Scruton said, multiculturalism like communism is bound to fail as both deny human nature. What I do not understand is why blacks are not in Africa helping with the expertise they have learnt in Europe. They leave it to Europeans to help Africa and then complain about the way Europeans treat them in Europe.

Russia is not the enemy as more and more people are beginning to realise and saying. Interesting that the BBC is showing a spate of programmes on Russia at present. Makes you wonder whether there are people in the BBC who realise this and reject the American model which is based on dumbing down and greed. Russians have one of the best education systems in the world left over from communist days and are some of the most cultured people around. And they will fight to the death. As Enoch Powell said they are our natural ally and we are both fighting the same enemy and need to step up to the mark.

They will as long as there is no credible alternative. They can't vote for the anti-working class Tory party, the Lib Dems were never a real option, Ukip paints itself as one party in the North (and managed to persuade some Northerners, while alienating many Southerners)and another in the South, as the Lib Dems did, and look what's happened to them.
An English nationalist party which supported the aspirations of the northern working class ought to do well in the North.

The SNP is another party which has managed to erect bridges between voters of different socio-economic backgrounds. It can be done though undoubtedly it's not easy.

Is it not this 'crusader' business which is giving rise to a lot of our problems - destabilising Middle Eastern countries then suffering an influx of refugees partly in consequence? The white dragon flag is preferable because of its lack of crusader connotations.

  8. Even the BBC has reported the attacks on German women on New Year's Eve by "refugees". The raping of native Swedish and Norwegian women by these people has been going on for at least a decade but is ignored by Western Media. Poland is helping Cameron swing the referendum if they get more NATO bases. The aims is to get Russia to invade so that the bankers' army that is NATO can invade Russia and attempt regime change. Russia will not be so stupid as to be provoked. Merkel told the Bundestag that Christians were the most persecuted religious grouping so can't quite grasp what she is doing for the New World Order by flooding Germany with more persecutors who are burning churches in Germany as they are in Burnley. Watched a repeat of Cross Talk on Christianity in the ME last night with Iben Thranholm from Denmark. You should look her up. She said that Europe is getting weaker and weaker since the Marxists pushed out Christianity and will loose the battle against Islam. Western liberalism is violently anti-Christian and atheistic and is using Islam for its own ends. But they will be hoist by their own petard. The winners will be their financier backers who are using them as useful idiots. They are aiming at the browning of Europe and Islamification as Europeans with all their innate qualities are their greatest enemy.

It said that around 1000 Arabs split into two groups to carry out the attacks on German women on New Year's Eve in Cologne. The reporter was at pains to point out that these attacks were not thought to have been carried out by refugees and therefore the authorities were urging people not to jump to the wrong conclusions!
I'm sure these women will be pleased and reassured to know that their attackers were not refugees but were from Germany's own Arab population.

  9. Why is it, in this country, that we have to sit around for one of these 'intellectuals' such as Douglas Murray to pop up from the establishment classes in order that the debate can be allowed to be 'legitimised', as if he is the first to say it. The ordinary people who live in these divided communities in this country, have, in their own way, been attempting to point out the general incompatibility between Islam and western secular liberalism for long enough but they have just been ignored and branded as extremists. It's indicative of this society that still only those from the elite educational establishment classes are deemed to be given the authority to speak. The debate is only 'legitimised' now it is far too late.
The article is good however and Murray makes some telling arguments. Murray's point is that Islam and Western secular liberalism do not easily cohabit. So why can't he just come out and say that. Instead, in an attempt to stay within the politically correct perameters set out by the establishment he goes round the houses of trying to conflate the issue of ISIS into the whole debate. The majority of moderate Muslims in this country would deplore what ISIS is doing so I don't understand why the two issues must be conflated by these establishment figures.
The establishment have denied the right to a rational debate in this country. About whether it was desirable to allow an ever increasing Muslim population to establish itself and consequently an ever increasing Islamic influence to conflict with this country's established way of doing things. As Bruno Gollnisch of the Front National points out, its the changing nature of western societies which Islam is bringing about and not only ISIS we should worry about.

  10. Somebody sent me an e-mail expressing the same bewilderment that I feel at the fact that the do-gooding liberals - or not so liberal as Ebin Thranholme has said - are the same sort who will fight to preserve animal species from extinction at the hands of man. And yet they will tell us that to be opposed to every race and culture living cheek by jowl and interbreeding is sheer heresy, racist, fascistic ( even though they are the real fascists).
At its base is the hatred of these people for their own race. They will undoubtedly be white and middle class. So as they will view those behind the disappearance of the animals as white so they can bash them. They will never underscore the good that whites mostly do to save animal species or indeed to save other races in the third world. The disappearance of their own race, culture and religion ( Christianity ) is their great mission. They may prize animal diversity but not human diversity spread around the globe. Their great dream is the browning of mankind so that the white race, with all that it has achieved for mankind as a whole, is history. And another point that puzzles me is that if non-whites are so proud of their history and culture then why do they want to come and live in white countries and become pseudo whites. Basically, they want the best of both worlds, to leave their own countries untouched but expand into European space. And those whites who welcome this in their frenzy of self-immolation howl down and attack those whites who do not. They are like suicide-bombers who wish to kill themselves for their own perverted ends and take as many of their own whom they so hate also with them. These people basically are suffering from a sort of self-hatred of their own identity. Those of us who are proud of who we are and of what our brothers and sisters have achieved throughout history are just dismissed as white supremacists. Have they noticed that both the Chinese, the Japanese and especially the Jews considered themselves to be exceptional and in the case of the latter the chosen race. And yet Europeans are the only ones they attack with the charge of supremacism.

  13. The Blair Clinton e-mails have revealed what some of us had already been told, namely that there was a hidden agenda to the NATO-led overthrow of Ghaddafi. Some of has already heard about his plans to use his vast gold reserves as the richest country in Africa to create the gold dinar and a currency union for Africa with a view to helping the development of Sub-Saharan Africa and free it from "western" exploitation. And then the intervention was to enable easier access to Libya's oil and strengthen France's position in North Africa. His removal has created the European "crisis". But both France and Germany seem to have a Eurabian agenda. However, Merkel is now in real trouble politically since the New Year's Eve attacks that took place all over Europe - probably here too but we are not being told.
I have a theory that somebody might soon try to take her out.

The sociopathic elite behind the New World Order are close to achieving their aims of the collapse of Western Civilisation and the removal of Europeans so they can brown the world and islamify it. Basically they are spreading the third world into the first rather than the other way round. Their great enemies are Russia and China. China is now rising and benefiting from its 4,000 years of history. China will never allow to be done to it what has happened to the West. They have built a wall against barbarians before and they would do it again. But so did the Hadrian all across North Africa.

I have reached the conclusion that these people are total psychotics, psychopaths enjoying the power of bringing about total human misery and mass destruction. Europeans have just a few decades left.

Meanwhile, the English cannot rely on UKIP. UKIP man Charles Coburn said on RT last night that he would never follow Trump re Islam and had many Muslim friends. They are all being forced into the Marxist multicultural anti-European mould.

I have been sent something about the Polish football fans refusing to have Muslim migrants in their country and to defend Christianity from extinction. Meanwhile the Pope is talking about a union with Islam. But the Vatican is hand in glove with the bankers and big corporations. The RC countries of Eastern Europe will have none of it. More and more of us are looking east to Russia and to Eastern Europe and to those who ultimately will refuse to give up our European identity and re-introduce it to western Europe. I have also been sent something about the paedophile ring at the BBC which is truly frightening and links in to that at Westminster and the police. At least one former prime minister whom I will not name is involved. And all the files have been destroyed and I dare not speak of the fate of those in the BBC who have spoken out.

    1. Of course it is, Clive. But nobody cares any more at the top because there are so many now involved in the New World Order's aim of English extinction and probably being rewarded for it that those fighting it seem to be getting nowhere. Does anybody know why the BNP has not re-registered? I had always suspected that Griffin was a secret service plant. If you had read what I have about the paedophile ring at the BBC and beyond and its overseas connections then you will reach the conclusion that only a mass rebellion all over Europe and the US will do anything to change things but I am sure they are well prepared for that. Some of us are beginning to doubt reality and think we must be going mad because we were brought up to believe so many lies and half-truths.
We are even beginning to fear the consequences of being privy to such ghastly information that they have kept hidden for so long. The only hope is that within the armed forces themselves, especially in the US, many have become aware of how they have been used by the Satanist elites and will mutiny when asked to fire on their own. By the way, Jacob Rothschild has said that Putin is a threat to the New World Order. Thank God for that. Eventually I hope the brainwashed and manipulated of Western Europe and the US will come to realise that Putin is a defender of the Old Word Order and European Christendom and identity; the world we knew as children before these evil megalomaniacs began on their plan to wipe out all those who might prove an impediment to their ultimate goal of one world government of the many by the few.
