Not punching above our weight any more? Given his enthusiasm for the UK to “punch above its weight” and following his government’s draconian defence cuts, the numbers of servicemen and women at Mr Cameron’s disposal are extremely modest compared to those available to his 19th and 20th century predecessors. A deteriorating situation in Eastern Europe might find the UK with little choice but to leave any punching to others.

"Not punching above our weight any more?"

What do you think?

"In recent times ministers have been fond of stating that being a union of four nations allows the UK to “punch above its weight” especially when it comes to military or foreign affairs. I read that our Prime Minister has developed this theme further and is now saying that being part of a European Union of 28 nations increases the UK’s ability to act in this way.

I suspect this belligerent mindset harks back to the days of Empire when the British political and military establishment had at their disposal a fleet on every ocean and regiments on every continent. Such a situation obviously no longer exists by any stretch of the imagination.

Today the Prime Minister is one of the most vociferous, second only to the Americans, in calling for action against Russia over Ukraine. At present this action is confined to trade and financial measures but economic war could escalate into something more serious.

Given his enthusiasm for the UK to “punch above its weight” and following his government’s draconian defence cuts, the numbers of servicemen and women at Mr Cameron’s disposal are extremely modest compared to those available to his 19th and 20th century predecessors.

  1. All very true, but more pressing is what the EDs have planned between now and September 18th to encourage the Scots to vote the right way for independence.
And just as pressing is what they have planned to upset Ukip's apple cart when Fararge launches Ukip's sanitised manifesto in Doncaster next month. Ukip is firmly dug in in the south. Don't let them usurp the English Democrats in their northern heartland. Taking on Ukip in Doncaster and exposing that party's contradictions and countering its inherent anti-English views could raise the ED's profile across the whole country, since the media spot-light will be on the launch (re-launch?)..

    1. UKIP's rejection of Scottish independence just shows their Southern bias and their inability to understand why the Scots should want to be free. Neither could they possibly understand why the English would want to be free either. I am beginning to suspect that UKIP is just another invention of the City of London and the Oligarchy bent on world domination. They are the wrong sort of Tory - the nasty party - and tied to the Atlanticism which is behind the abolition of nationalism and the creation of multicultural rootless individuals for the benefit of the one per cent bent on world hegemony. Some of us who know what has really been going on in the world for the last hundred years or so are beginning to suspect that UKIP are just another variety of One World con artists.

  2. I don't believe diminishing our military is accidental. Keep it small(er) and abroad and it won't be a problem when the Elite complete the sale of our nation to Germany.

    1. You could add China, France, India and the USA which are also buying us up. According to Cameron and Osborne, selling England at bargain basement prices is a triumph.
